Extreme heat from the park’s underground super volcano is adding to the heat of the summer sun and have melted a section of road in Yellowstone National Park, forcing the temporary closure of the 3.3-mile-long Firehole Lake Drive. The road has turned into a mushy mess.
Park spokesman Dan Hottle says “It basically turned the asphalt into soup,” said Hottle. “It turned the gravel road into oatmeal.” They are also requesting hikers to stay out of the area, saying what appears to be solid ground, could have hot water just below the surface.
The road will stay closed for the next several days while maintenance crews make repairs. Updated Yellowstone National Park road information is available 24 hours a day at 307-344-2117, or you can visit: http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm
