If you have a mixed breed dog, bust out the treats. Today is National Mutt Day. Established in 2005, the bi-annual event was created to raise awareness about adopting mixed breed dogs from local shelters.

I like big mutts and I cannot lie. Four years ago, my fiance adopted a lab-hound mix named Fred. Fred was abandoned by his previous owners and spent nearly a year in a shelter. It was so traumatic for him that he still suffers from separation anxiety and has issues around other dogs, especially with food.

If you ever meet Fred, be warned. He has the worst smelling gas of any dog in the world. We've tried everything from altering his diet to giving him Gas-X, yet his flatulence is still pungent enough to bring tears to your eyes. He also has a bizarre habit of eating dirty underwear and he likes to howl along whenever we play music in the house.

In spite of those quirks, Fred is a beloved member of our family. As much as we've helped him, he's helped us even more. He is a loyal and loving companion and our lives wouldn't be the same without him.

Want to show off your mutt? Send a picture of your mixed breed dog to rick.roddam@townsqauremedia.com. To celebrate National Mutt Day, we'll post your dog's picture on our website and we'll hook you up with tickets for an upcoming University of Wyoming basketball too.
