Soul Train changed the landscape of American television when it debuted in 1971. Don Cornelius who pioneered this TV masterpiece was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, California home of an apparent suicide. Soul Train started out as a local Chicago program that eventually was broadcast nationally from 1971 to 2006. Don was able to showcase legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Al Green.

Quincy Jones was a friend and business partner.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague, and business partner Don Cornelius,” said Quincy Jones. “Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business. Before MTV there was ‘Soul Train,’ that will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius. His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched. My heart goes out to Don’s family and loved ones.”

The dance line was certainly a highlight to watch every weekend. We all watched the show in order to learn new dance steps, groove to the beat and get down. In some ways you could say that Don “Helped break down racial barriers.”

Don Cornelius; pioneer, visionary and one who was gifted with  an awesome baritone set of pipes. Don was the epitome of cool who brought joy to a generation through music; truly  the universal language.

RIP Don Cornelius!!

This line dance video features Fred ‘Rerun’ Berry (at 1 :07) of the TV show ‘What’s Happening!’

Long Live Soul Train!!!!!!!!!!
