A third wild fire in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Laramie Peak grew quickly from 30 acres to about 5000 late Thursday. A Type 2 Incident Management Team has been assessing the extent of the Arapaho fire which is burning in steep terrain.

Rita Baysinger, management team information officer, says Albany County evacuation notices for Cottonwood, Harris and Friend Parks, plus the North Laramie Trail head have been issued along with evacuation of Converse County residents along Esterbrook Road.

“The evacuation is from the county line to the Esterbrook guard station. The community of Esterbrook, however is not included in the evacuations at this time.”

Baysinger says there are many structures threatened by the fire and the management team has been assessing from the air any damage that may have occurred.

Resources no longer needed for the Russell’s Camp Fire have been reassigned to the Arapaho Fire including two aircraft.

A Type 1 Incident Management team is on order and expected to arrive sometime on Sunday.

The cause of the fire is unknown, however earlier in the week a lightning storm went through the area.
