The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Wyoming ranks 10th for pet ownership with 61.8 percent of households owning a pet.

The top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont with 70.8 percent pet owners
  • New Mexico with 67.6 percent pet owners
  • South Dakota with 65.6 percent pet owners
  • Oregon with 63.6 percent pet owners
  • Maine with 62.9 percent pet owners
  • Washington with 62.7 percent  pet owners
  • Arkansas with 62.4 percent pet owners
  • West Virginia with 62.1 percent pet owners
  • Idaho with 62 percent pet owners
  • Wyoming with 61.8 percent pet owners

The 10 states with the lowest percentage of pet-owning households are:

  • Rhode Island with 53 percent pet owners
  • Minnesota with 53 percent pet owners
  • California with 52.9 percent pet owners
  • Maryland with 52.3 percent pet owners
  • Illinois with 51.8 percent pet owners
  • Nebraska with 51.3 percent pet owners
  • Utah with 51.2 percent pet owners
  • New Jersey with 50.7 percent pet owners
  • New York with 50.6 percent pet owners
  • Massachusetts with 50.4 percent pet owners
  • District of Columbia with 21.9 percent pet owners
