The people in Wyoming are some of the nicest I’ve ever met in the country. The cowboy way inherently gives a helping hand to others in need. I think it is part of being a smaller community that people need to take care of each other. Ironically In larger cities, people are more isolated from each other. In Wyoming, when driving down an empty country road, we feel the obligation to wave at any passing cars whether you know them or not.

We decided to put together a list of simple random acts of kindness that will cost you little to nothing. Some require time and thought, and other are just as simple as a smile and a wave.

The simplest way to brighten someone's day is with a friendly smile. It is a butterfly effect, where that simple gesture ripples into something much larger. The best part is it won't cost you a penny.

  • Just Listen and Be Present for Someone in Need

Sometimes the nicest thing you can do for someone in need is to listen. Don't try and "fix" or offer different ways to do things. Just listen. Be present. It can make the world of difference for someone going through tough times.

  • Shovel the Neighbors Walk

If you are in healthy shape (or own a snowblower,) you could easily make your neighbors day by shoveling their walkway on a snowy day. It's free, but it is work.

  • Volunteer Your Time

This can be something like giving your time to a church youth group or washing dishes at a soup kitchen. But do not forget the simple things like reading to a group of school kids or visiting with residents at a retirement home. There are opportunities to help all around.

  • Babysit For Busy Parents for Free

Do you know some hard-working parents that need a break? Offer to babysit so they can go on a date night. Maybe you know a single mom that just needs a few hours to get some shopping done. Take their kids to the park so the parents can have some time.

  • Bake or Cook for Someone

If you know how to bake or cook, you could share your talents with the office or maybe even the fire department or police. It would be a good idea to check first if a group accepts gifts. Some organizations have rules against food items not pre-packaged. You don't want to take the time to bake some snickerdoodles if no one can enjoy them.

  • Help Motorists Stuck in Snow

This is a no-brainer for most Wyomingites. When someone is stuck on the side of the road, people are quick to help each other out.
