Like Macy's and Sears, recently, the parent company for JCPenney announced another round of store closures that has 138 stores shutting down. The four Wyoming stores are now down to three.

The Casper and Cheyenne JCPenney stores escaped the latest hit list, but unfortunately, the Sheridan, Wyoming JCPenney will be turning off their lights. A sad tale for a great Wyoming success story.

JCPenney began in Kemmerer, Wyoming on April 14, 1902. They reached their peak in 1973 with 2,053 stores.

In 1978, the J. C. Penney Historic District in Kemmerer, Wyoming, was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Glad to hear of the reprieve for Casper and Cheyenne. Cheyenne has recently seen the loss of a number of businesses including Sports Authority, Sutherlands, Radio Shack, K Mart, Los Abuelos, The Redwood, The Cheyenne Brewing Company, Kabob King among them.
