You never know what kind of hidden treasures will turn up at a garage sale.

A woman in Huntington Beach, California is kicking herself today after she accidentally sold a pair of $18,000 diamond earrings for 20 bucks at a garage sale last month.

Dori Rhoades claims she put the jewelry, along with $1,500 earmarked for a family vacation, in the pocket of an old jacket as a hiding spot in case she was ever robbed. Unfortunately, she forgot what she did and come the day of the garage sale in May it came back to bite her:

I volunteer in my kids' classrooms multiple times a week, I work full time, I think anyone who is a mother knows. You give so much of yourself that sometimes your brain stops working. That morning, I sold the jean jacket without even a thought. For $20."

Rhoades is hardly alone -- a man, also in Southern California, recently sold his wife's $23,000 wedding ring at a garage sale for 10 bucks.

Moral of the story: maybe people in that area of the country should refrain from having garage sales.
