The Squirrel Creek Fire near Laramie, which was discovered Saturday, has now grown to 7,000 acres. A “Code Red” immediate evacuation notice has been issued for all residents from Jelm Mountain on the south, north along Sheep Mountain and all the way to Highway 130. The evacuation order includes the west side of Highway 230, and Sheep Mountain up to Lake Hattie.

The fire started in the Squirrel Creek drainage on the Medicine Bow National Forest, about two-miles south-southeast of Lake Owen, and about four miles to the west-northwest of Woods Landing.

The Arapaho Fire near Laramie Peak has now burned more than 75,000 acres. It has destroyed several structures, but the fire is making it hard for officials to determine an exact amount of destruction. Fire investigators say the fire is so large, it’s creating its own weather, including lightning. Nearly 600 personnel are battling that blaze, which is located about 28 miles northwest of Wheatland.
