In the late 1860’s, the rush was on to complete the technological marvel of the age – the transcontinental railroad. Though the route seems obvious now, it fell to an English-born surveyor, James Evans, to find the way west from Cheyenne over the Rockies, the highest point of the entire line, more than 8,000 feet. Evans found the way, kept the line entirely in the state – and gave a name to Evanston, Wyoming.
