What’s In A Wyoming Name? – Crook County

The Apache called him “Grey Wolf.” General George Crook, a West Point graduate, came west after leading campaigns in the Civil War. He fought many battles in Wyoming with the Sioux and Cheyenne but spent his later years speaking out against encroachments on Indian land. Chief Red Cloud said of Crook, “He never lied to us. His words gave us hope.” He gave the nation decades of service – and a name to Crook County, Wyoming.
