After 9 days of being gone, our much loved cat, Finster, finally returned just before 6am yesterday. He was a few pounds lighter, seemed a pretty wazzzed out and was scruffy for his misadventures. Today, he’s back to his usual “Let Me Out!” whining.

At about a year old, usually, he starts his wandering at about 5am and returns after about 12 hours of God knows what. That was his schedule until just over a week ago, when we think he got spooked by a neighborhood Rottweiler, ran off, got lost, and then found his way back home.

Now, what to do. He is an outdoor cat and a hunter. Keeping him inside would kill his spirit, so we don’t want to keep him inside. While that would probably give him a longer life, there is life… and there is living. He’s an outdoor cat.

My sister-in-law suggested a special cat-proof fence that tops the kind of cedar fence we already have, but it would be cost prohibitive. I can see him pulling vigorously against any leash. An outdoor cage sounds kind of cruel, so I don’t know what to do to keep him in our yard at least.

I would like to attach a tiny camera to see where he wanders to. I would also like to get one of those tracker chips. Both of those, work, after the fact

Have you had any experience with a situation like this? What did you do? I am open to suggestions in the comments section, if you would be so kind.

Thanks for any suggestions.
