The Twin Towers were enormous buildings and the attacks of 9/11 were of such magnitude that people were able to see the skyline change from neighboring states and camera-equipped satellites were even able to capture the aftermath from space.

This photo was taken by an enhanced thematic mapper camera on NASA’s Landsat 8 on at 11:30am on September 12th.

Other images from space, taken on September 11 by astronaut Frank Culbertson were also released this week. Culbertson spoke with CNN about his experience witnessing the attacks from above planet Earth:

“It’s difficult to describe how it feels to be the only American completely off the planet at a time such as this. The feeling that I should be there with all of you, dealing with this, helping in some way, is overwhelming.”
