The Wyoming Cowboys will face Coastal Carolina in the CBI Championship finals this week. Let’s take a look at the Pokes opponent.

One note about these two teams is they both appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys lost to Northern Iowa, while the Chanticleers lost to Wisconsin.

    The Nickname/Mascot

A “Chanticleer” is a name given to a rooster, especially in fairy tales. Don’t believe us? Look it up for yourself. It is pronounced "SHON-tuh-clear." The university does have a live rooster that appears at some events. The live mascot is “Maddox.” The athletic mascot is named “Chauncey.”

    Connection to Clemson University

Just like Wyoming, the Chanticleers have their own connection to Clemson. Former Cowboys head coach Larry Shyatt was a head coach with the Tigers, and so was current CCU head man Cliff Ellis. He coached at Clemson from 1984-1994. Ellis is in his 10th season as the Chanticleers bench boss. His 713 victories ranks him 20th on the list of all-time career coaching victories in Division 1 basketball.

CCU won its only NCAA title in baseball during the 2016 season. The Chanticleers beat Arizona at the College World Series in Omaha, NE. By the way, UW has three NCAA championships. One in hoops (1943) and a pair in skiing (1968 & 1985).
