Storm Prompts School Closings, Travel Warning

Casper Snow
Gary & Susannah Thompson

The heavy, wet snow that fell overnight has forced school officials to cancel classes for Friday, and authorities are urging people to avoid any unnecessary travel.

Because of the numerous power outages, many traffic signals are inoperative. Authorities urge caution when approaching all intersections if you have to be out on the roads.

Natrona County School District officials have cancelled classes today, and there will be no classes at Casper College. Converse County schools are in session, but buses are only running in Glenrock and Rolling Hills, not in the outlying areas.

Because of the early season snow, the snow is downing hundreds of trees and tree limbs throughout the area. This has caused numerous power outages and created hazards for drivers, with downed power lines along with branches, limbs and trees in some roadways.

Natrona County Emergency managers are urging people to avoid any unnecessary travel, and only call 911 in the event of an emergency.

WYDOT is reporting that Hwy 26 is closed between Casper and Riverton, and Interstate 90 is shut down between Gillette and Buffalo. I-25 is closed from just north of Casper to Kaycee. Hwys 487 and 77 are closed south of Casper to Medicine Bow. WYO 220 between Pathfinder and WY 487 is also closed.

Officials with the City of Casper report that all non-essential city services will be shut down today. That means city hall and most of the Hall of Justice will be closed, as well as recreational facilities.

The Natrona County Courthouse is closed today.

Snow plows and other safety efforts will be working, including dispatch, police and fire. Authorities are urging people to only call 911 in the event of an emergency.

CATC Buses will not be operating today in Casper.

The weather has prompted delays and cancellations of flights in to and out of Casper/Natrona County International Airport. If you have travel plans, you should contact your airline to check the status of your flight.
