The expanded editions of ‘Rumours‘ — Fleetwood Mac‘s career-defining album from 1977 — is available today, featuring unreleased live and studio recordings from the tumultuous time that surrounded the album’s making. For Stevie Nicks, it was yet another chance to relive the drama and pain, something she’s done frequently over the years.

Nicks tells Rolling Stone that she goes back in time every time she performs one of the original songs from ‘Rumours.’ “It travels, and all these songs do that,” she said. “To me, they are always exciting. I never feel bored when we burst into one of our big hit songs, because what they were all written about was so heavy that they could never be boring.”

It’s been 20 years since the first seeds were planted for what would become the 1997 comeback effort that’s carried forward to 2013 and the North American tour. In 1993, Fleetwood Mac played President Bill Clinton’s inaugurationLindsey Buckingham says in the same interview that enough time had passed since his 1987 departure, and they were able to behave as adults. Nicks is quick to accept blame for her role in the drama.

“I think one of the reasons that Lindsey left is because I was very, very high on this horrific tranquilizer,” she says referring to her much-documented Klonopin addiction, for which she received treatment in late 1993. “I didn’t even make it to most of the recording sessions for ‘Tango in the Night (1987).’ I was sick.”

“When I came out of rehab, I did a small three-month tour, and I got through it. I was going to be OK, and everyone knew I was going to be OK,” she added. “And I think that’s when Lindsey thought Fleetwood Mac could go on, because his beloved ex-girlfriend was not going to die. She was going to make it.”

Buckingham tells Rolling Stone the band is not out of inspiration, even though the rocky relationships that inspired ‘Rumours’ have been paved to some extent. He hints that new music might be on the horizon, talking again about the songs he cut with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie in 2012 that Nicks has added vocals too. Another track from a rumored future release would be from Buckingham-Nicks, but the band is in no hurry.

“We’re not pushing it. We’re just going to wait and see what everybody wants to hear.”
