Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ Put on Indefinite Hold

Though both Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway seemed to be set as the leads, and the film had a release date of April 25, 2014, it looks like Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of ‘Robopocalypse‘ is going to be put on hold for an indefinite period of time.

Drew Godard (‘The Cabin in the Woods’) was working on the script, but the always-deadly “script problems” are being sighted for the delay (by The Hollywood Reporter), and the quote from Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy  includes the phrase “back to the drawing board to see what is possible,” which makes it sound like if Spielberg is still on board, it would require a mass overhaul.

THR notes that Spielberg has recently commented that he’s bored with the action genre. This points out that in 2011, Spielberg had two films (‘The Adventures of Tintin,’ ‘War Horse’) that underperformed, which may have led him to taking ‘Robopocalypse’ with the thoughts of delivering another hit. But as ‘Lincoln’ is on track to make over $150 million domestically, and could make even more if gets a number of Oscar nominations (it will) and wins (it could), it’s likely that Spielberg no longer feels as much pressure to deliver a box office hit. Or perhaps the script is troubled as was reported. We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments.
