‘Star Trek’ and video games haven’t had the most friendly of relationships. ‘Star Wars’ fans have been able to enjoy years of great games from the original ‘Dark Forces’ to ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ while poor Trekkies have one more reason to be disappointed with their lives. Now one group of game developers are trying to rectify that.

Bandai Namco Games, Paramount Digital Entertainment and Digital Extremes have been working on what looks to be the greatest and most epic ‘Star Trek’ game since any of those sucky attempts to capture the awesomeness of the ‘Star Trek’ universe in pixels.

The trailer confirms that the most, if not all, of the original cast from the recent reboot of the franchise including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock will at least feature their likenesses. It also has the look and feel of the J.J. Abrams film with a third-person interface that puts you in epic phaser battles and jumping away from explosions at just the right moment, the way God intended a ‘Star Trek’ video game to be.

However, it doesn’t reveal too much of the plot in terms of whether it will mirror the plot of the first or second film due out next year or serve as a bridge between them. Frankly, we don’t care. We’re just glad there is finally something that can help us erase the horrid memory of the original ‘Star Trek’ game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Seriously, ‘Gilligan’s Island’ was more fun to play and most fans of that show haven’t upgraded from their pinball machine.
