This massive mound of granite was just one of many landmarks for early travelers along the Oregon Trail. Even today, the lack of development makes it easy to imagine the homesteaders and trappers voyaging across the prairie.

When driving across Wyoming, these geologic markers are easy to spot. Registry Clif, Independence Rock, Devils Gate, and Split Rock are all points leading to South Pass. In the 1800s, this stretch took many months. Split Rock was a landmark that travelers would see for many days before and after that helped them navigate the Rattlesnake Mountains. Split Rock was also a station for the Pony Express.
