Ryan Newman Wins at Martinsville Speedway [VIDEO]
The craziest part of the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 were the last few laps, and at the end, it was Ryan Newman taking home the Grandfather Clock Trophy. This was Ryan’s first victory of the season, his first at Martinsville, and the 16th of his career. This is the third win for Stewart-Haas Racing this year.
The weirdness really began with 10 laps to go, David Reutiman was having some trouble and needed to get to pit road, but stayed on the track. Hendrick Racing was hoping to get their 200th team victory, and with 5 laps to go, it was Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon racing for first, and Earnhardt Jr. in third. It looked like it was going to be a great day for Rick Hendrick.
Then, Reutimann just stopped on the back stretch bringing out the 5th caution of the day. He just stopped on the track, and it earned him a trip to the NASCAR trailer after the race. This set up a green and white checkered finish. During yellow flag pit stops, Johnson and Gordon stayed out, but just about all of the other lead lap cars made pit stops for fuel, and at least two fresh tires.
The green flag dropped with 2 laps to go, Gordon was in first, and in turn one all hell broke loose. Gordon and Johnson were both spun out of the lead, bringing out the sixth caution of the race, and putting Ryan Newman in first, A.J. Allmendinger in second, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in third, and setting up another shot at a green and white checkered finish.
After the restart it was a drag race for the win between Newman and Allmendinger, with Newman holding on for the win. Allmendinger finished 2nd, Earnhardt Jr. 3rd, Matt Kenseth 4th, and Martin Truex Jr. wrapping up the top 5.
(Remember, everytime Ryan Newman and the #39 Outback Steakhouse car finishes in the top ten, Outback Steakhouse gives away a free bloomin’ onion on the following Monday if you mention it.)
In an interview with Fox Sport’s Dick Bergren, David Reutimann had this to say about stopping on the track and bringing out a caution after staying out even after being black flagged,
The motor just quit. I would not have stopped on a frickin’ racetrack. I would have limped it around there and come to pit road, which is exactly what I was trying to do. The thing quit going down the back straightaway and it shut off.”
Here are some video highlights of Newman’s win…
NASCAR is taking next weekend off for Easter, and the next race will be the Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. TV coverage will begin at 4:30PM on Fox.
