President’s Feelings Mixed On Marijuana Use

Mark Wilson, Getty Images

In a profile of President Obama published in The New Yorker, he presents both sides of the issue whether marijuana should be legalized nationwide.Obama did admit Colorado and Washington Sate are a measuring tool for the rest of the country moving forward. He described it as a “slippery slope” with advocates for harder drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine desiring their legalization.

“I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”

How does he handle the subject with his daughters?

The president told The New Yorker that he does not advise his daughters to experiment with marijuana, calling it “it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”

What about the criminal penalties in the other 48 states?

Obama said it is disturbing to him that low-income young people are more apt to be arrested for the drug than middle-class kids. And more times than not, it’s African-American and Latino users who are the ones hauled off to jail and processed through the system.
