Pokes Hope For Big Crowds This Season
After Saturday’s competitive 3 point loss to Nebraska, Wyoming fans seem to be even more excited for the 2013 season.
Both Cowboy coaches and players have been adamant this week, defending the home turf will be a vital part of the Cowboys success this year. “If we can get the stadium filled it’s huge” Wyoming wide receiver Robert Herron said. “Especially with the altitude in Laramie, it’s a big advantage. If fans come out I’ll try to put on a show for them”
Wyoming scanned an average of 13,338 tickets per game in 2012. A number well below what they had hoped for.
Defensive Coordinator Chris Tormey explained “Your home field should be a tremendous advantage. We’ve got great fans and I hope they come out. I can’t imagine what you’d find better to do on a Saturday afternoon.”
While there are many factors in attendance numbers, the largest is on-field success. In 2012 the first game of the year against Toledo was the biggest draw with over 17,000 scanned tickets. Senior day against San Diego State recorded just over 6,000 fans.
Head Coach Dave Christensen says those kind of numbers are unacceptable. “If they don’t (pick up tickets) they’ll be missing out. We have an explosive offense this year that will be exciting to watch and our defense will be attacking. I think we’re going to have a team that plays with a lot of passion. I hope people come out, get tickets, and enjoy the show.”
Attendance numbers aren’t just needed to look impressive according to linebacker Eddie Yarbrough. “It makes all the difference. When you’re out there and you’re tired, you have that crowd pumping you up. It kind of takes some of the load off you with that crowd and we really do appreciate the support.”
