Several area organizations are collaborating again this year to offer a free community weekly exercise program along the Platte River Trails and beyond. For ten Mondays starting at 6:00 p.m. on June 1, participants will travel from one pre-designated point to another primarily along the Platte River Trails.

The concept is that those who attend each week will cover the entire length of the Platte River Trails by the end of the program. The first seven weeks’ events are advertised as walks, but participants may join in who are running, riding bicycles, roller-blading or moving in some other manner under their own power. The length of each walk is approximately 3.5 to 4 miles; participants can shorten the distance by turning around at the halfway point which will be marked. Weeks 8 and 9 are being designated for those on bicycles only as distances are significantly longer. The final week will be a measured 5K (3.1 miles) for either walkers or runners only. Finish times will be available for week 10.

There are a few changes to this year’s program compared to past years. This year’s course will be traversed in reverse order from past events. Another change is that the program has a new name…Walk It, Bike It, Run It! The culminating three weeks are an added twist to the program and encourage cycling and culminating with a measured, timed event. Bus transportation will not be provided this year. Participants who are unable to return to their vehicles by their own power should consider turning around at the marked halfway points.

The first of seven scheduled community excursions along the Platte River Trails will be held on Monday, June 1, beginning at the Natrona County Health Department at 475 S. Spruce Street at 6:00 p.m. and ending at the intersection of Jackson and C Streets.
