At the risk of sounding like a crotchety old curmudgeon, social media sites have really lowered the bar for communication.  Don't get me wrong, I'm all for freedom of speech.  If you have an opinion, you are entitled to speak your mind.  However, the ability to talk smack from the cheap seats has turned our society into a collective peanut gallery.

The recent tragedy involving the Cardenas family is a classic example.  As I read online about the heartbreaking loss of their three St. Bernard dogs, the conversation on local social media sites took an ugly turn.  Instead of expressing their sympathy for the family's loss, many people chose instead to criticize the family.  It was sickening.

Whether or not you believe their dog should have been on a leash is irrelevant.  To kick someone while their down is despicable.  As a community, we all rely on each other whether we want to admit it or not.  There may come a time when an intelligent public conversation about this incident is warranted. This was not the time and certainly not the place.  We should be helping each other during times of trouble, not tearing each other down with petty online bickering.
