Officials with Peabody Energy's North Antelope Rochelle Mine in northeastern Wyoming told some employees to not report to work later this week amid uncertainty about layoffs.

An unknown number of miners were handed letters Tuesday instructing them to skip work and attend a meeting in Douglas on Friday.

Neither the letters nor those distributing them indicated the purpose for the meeting.

A Peabody spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter.
The notices come after Peabody recently announced it would cut workers at its Caballo and Rawhide mines.

North Antelope Rochelle has largely avoided the job cuts at other mining operations and has increased its employment by 4 percent since 2011.

Peabody has said it's looking at alternatives to filing for bankruptcy as the company has $6.3 billion in debt.
