Today marks the 34th anniversary of John Lennon's murder. Lennon was shot to death outside his New York City apartment by Mark David Chapman.

An emotional McCartney appeared on U.K. TV Saturday on The Jonathan Ross Show, recalling when he first received the news that his friend and Beatles band mate had been killed.

McCartney remembered being stunned at the news.

"It was just so horrific," he said. "You couldn't take it in and I couldn't take it in and I just for days couldn't think that he was gone...It was just a huge shock, then I had to tell [my late wife] Linda and the kids and it was very difficult...It was very difficult for everyone."

He went on to compare the feeling similar to that of the way people felt when John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Sir Paul added, on a personal note, "For me it was just so sad that I wasn't going to see [Lennon] again and we weren't going to hang out."

McCartney then described his feelings regarding Lennon's murderer and the senselessness of John's death.

"The phrase kept coming in my head 'jerk of all jerks,'" said Paul.  "It was just like, 'This is just a jerk, this is not even a guy politically motivated, it's just some total random thing.'"
