that lived through the sixties I had an inherent hatred for Richard Nixon. I thought that he was the epitome of everything that was wrong with America in the late 60's and 70's. Civil Rights. The war in Vietnam. The fixed elections. The Watergate break in. The attack on rock and roll. Woodstock. The list goes on.  40 years ago I was sitting in my parents living room in Casper, having just hitch hiked back to Wyoming. I was listening to the local fm station, where I was working, doing homework, when the announcement came. He was done. Finally. 40 years ago today I remember exactly where I was. "Richard Milhous Nixon announced last night that he will resign as the 37th President of the United States at noon today.Vice President Gerald R. Ford of Michigan will take the oath as the new President at noon to complete the remaining 2 1/2 years of Mr. Nixon's term. After two years of bitter public debate over the Watergate scandals, President Nixon bowed to pressures from the public and leaders of his party to become the first President in American history to resign." I experienced the same feeling I felt when John Kennedy was shot. The day the music died. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/watergate/articles/080974-3.htm
