Guess What Parents? Nintendo Wii Isn’t Actually Making Your Kids More Fit

Parents, don’t let your kids fool you into getting them a Nintendo Wii with promises that it’ll make them exercise more. A newly released study says that’s just a bunch of bologna.

When the Wii was introduced, some public health experts believed this more “active” game play would actually make kids healthier, but it was only now just tested to see if that was true.

Researchers from Baylor’s College of Medicine gave Wii consoles to 77 9- to 12-year-olds who didn’t already have one. Half that group were given active games, like ‘Dance Dance Revolution,’ while the other half got more passive games like ‘Super Mario Galaxy.’

Each child’s movement was tracked using an accelerometer device. After thirteen weeks of testing, the researcher found that the kids with active games had logged no more physical activity than those with the passive ones.

“Frankly, we were shocked by the complete lack of difference,” said Tom Baranowski, who worked on the study.
