NCAR Supercomputer ‘Yellowstone’ Is Almost Ready

Final Testing Underway At Cheyenne “Supercomputer”

Final testing is being done on a National Center for Atmospheric Research supercomputer on the outskirts of Cheyenne that will be used for climate modeling and other Earth sciences.

The new computer, called Yellowstone, is among the top dozen or so fastest supercomputers in the world. The roughly $30 million IBM machine is housed in a purpose-built facility. An opening ceremony is scheduled for October 15th.

Meanwhile, the University of Wyoming has received the hardware for a new high-performance computing center on campus. The Advanced Research Computing Center will allow UW faculty to conduct computational research.

Tim Kuhfuss is UW’s director of research support for Information Technology. He says delivery of the computer culminates two years of planning and development.

The high-performance computing center will provide faculty opportunities to eventually scale up their research to use the new National Center for Atmospheric Research-Wyoming Supercomputing Center at Cheyenne.
