The team that really had to win didn't and the team that could afford a loss won. Such was Friday Night Lights in the world of Wyoming Prep Football. The number one ranked and undefeated NCHS Mustangs (5-0) remained that way routing Evanston (1-4) 48-6. And what's even more amazing pundits say the Mustangs haven't played thier best football yet. You don't want to fumble on your first two possessions against NCHS. The Mustangs converted both turnovers into touchdowns on the way to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and a 28-0 advantage at halftime, all but securing the game against the over matched Red Devils. Literally the Mustangs made it look easy. Coach Harshman said: ""Turnovers are the key stat in football, our guys are doing a good job in that area and working hard at it and overcoming some stuff. We had some penalties and goofy stuff early on, and our guys overcame that." I shudder to think what happens when the Mustangs fire on all cylinders for four quarters.

The Kelly Walsh Trojans really needed a win to sustain their playoff hopes and had to travel to Cheyenne to get that win. It didn't happen.  With Cheyenne East quarterback and the 2013 Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year Tevis Bartlett on the sideline, Kelly Walsh had a prime chance to win its third consecutive game and climb above .500 for the first time in 2014. But the Trojans couldn't capitalize. The Trojans kept within striking distance late into the fourth quarter and had a drive to take the lead, but Cheyenne East's defense came up with a couple big stops and the T-Birds (3-2) pulled away for a 27-12 victory. "Opportunities were there," Kelly Walsh coach Jon Vance said. "We just have to take advantage of them." So this coming weekend it's the cross town rivalry. It's the Oil Bowl. Game to be heard on AM 1400 ESPN with Mr. Jack Nokes and Rodeo Rick.
