Tom Petty has released another new song from Mudcrutch, his revived pre-Heartbreakers band. You can check out "Beautiful World" above.

Mudcrutch earlier issued "Trailer" as an advance taste of Mudcrutch 2, which is set for release on May 20. "Beautiful World," as the title suggests, is shot through with sunny optimism. That's a far cry from 2014's dark and serious Hypnotic Eye, Petty's most recent album with the Heartbreakers.

Mudcrutch originally featured two other future members of the Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, along with Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon – the brother of former Eagles co-founder Bernie Leadon. (Tom's song "Hollywood Waltz" was subsequently on the Eagles' 1975 album One of These Nights.) Mudcrutch released a single titled "Depot Street" before breaking up in 1974. That track, along with "On the Street," "Up in Mississippi Tonight" and an early version of "Don't Do Me Like That" later appeared on Playback, a Petty box set released in 1995.

The group reformed in 2007, releasing a self-titled debut album the next year. A live EP followed, before Mudcrutch went on hiatus while Petty, Campbell and Tench returned to work with the Heartbreakers. The new Mudcrutch album was originally slated for release some time ago, but Leadon reportedly suffered some health issues. Dates in support of Mudcrutch 2 will include stops at the Bunbury Music and Summer Camp Music festivals this summer.

Hypnotic Eye became Tom Petty's first-ever chart-topping album, besting the No. 2 hit Damn the Torpedoes from 1979. Mudcrutch went to No. 8 in 2008.
