Model trains we're never really a big hobby for me or anyone my age for that matter. Clearly though the hobby has not died out. In fact it appears to be flourishing in Germany.

Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany contains the world’s largest model railroad universe which attracts over one million guests a year. Not only are there trains, but also over 200 mini computer controlled cars and trucks. There are even mock mini fires, and a mini fire brigade. And don’t forget about the working mini airport, amusement park, and the space shuttle.
