Who’s Lovin’ This? McDonald’s Now Hiring Cashiers With a College Degree

You probably don’t need more proof that the job market is competitive, but we’ve got some, anyway.

A McDonald’s in Winchedon, Massachusetts recently posted an ad for a cashier position online. No supersize deal, right? Well, it is when you consider the listing states applicants must have two years’ experience, as well as a bachelor’s degree.

Job Diagnosis

That’s right – McDonald’s is now scouring the college ranks to find qualified candidates to ring people up for a Big Mac and a small shake. It’s a job that stereotypically features high school kids looking to make some pocket money, but now they’re going to have to compete with people who’ve spent four years working towards a degree while racking up student loans that they can now pay off one large fries at a time.

The job isn’t so bad. It offers health benefits, discounted meals and free uniforms and reminds hopefuls they can “get a weekly paycheck with a side order of food, folks and fun.” And that doesn’t even take into account the potential for advancement. Gee – maybe if you work hard enough and go for your master’s at night, you can work your way up to fry guy.

UPDATE: As it turns out, the story proved to be nothing but hocum. The restaurant’s owner released a statement, saying, “There has been some misinformation reported by an independent job site with no relationship to the Winchendon, Massachusetts McDonald’s. The original job posting, which could be accessed through, did not require a bachelor’s degree. We are working diligently to have the misinformation removed from the site but to date the website has been unresponsive to our requests.”

The ad has also been removed from the site where it was posted.
