In 1967, Donald Fagan was walking past a café when he heard Walter Becker practicing guitar. Fagan asked Becker if he wanted to be in a band and they started writing songs together. They had a number of different bands, including one with comedian Chevy Chase on drums.

Then the pair joined up with the touring band for Jay and the Americans, but the antisocial pair ended up taking a 50 percent pay cut from $100 per show and were compared to “cult leader Charles Manson and spree killer Charles Starkweather.” They were not the easiest guys to get along with.

They ended up naming their band after a “steam-powered strap-on dildo mentioned in the William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch.”

Steely Dan released their first album Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972 and it hit big with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In the Years." They toured for few years but due mostly to Donald’s hesitance to sing in public and reclusive lifestyle, they mostly retired for long periods of time, becoming a studio band that would blend Rock, Jazz, Pop and R&B.

Walter Becker passed away Sept.3, 2017 but now, Donald Fagen has the latest version of Steely Dan ready to roll and will be in Denver, Colorado with The Doobie Brothers this summer.
