CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A proposed state law would stop employers from asking potential hires about their criminal histories on job applications.

A group of lawmakers have filed the bill that would add the restriction to Wyoming's discriminatory and unfair employment practices.

Lead sponsor Representative Jim Byrd, D-Cheyenne, says the bill would make it easier for people with past legal problems to move forward with their lives.

Employers would still be able to ask applicants about their criminal histories during interviews and run background checks on potential hires.

The proposed law would not apply to jobs where a criminal conviction automatically disqualifies the applicant from the position.

The proposal will be considered when the 2016 session begins in February.
