Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck has died at the age of 91. Brubeck is best known for 'Take Five,' his 1959 recording on the album 'Time Out' that sold over a million copies—the first jazz single to do so.

Brubeck's music, and 'Take Five' is an example of this, was often experimental, with unusual time signatures and polytonality, which is the usage of multiple keys simultaneously. In 1954 he became the first jazz musician featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Two years ago, Brubeck had heart surgery and received a pacemaker, but he continued playing. When he died Wednesday morning, he was on his way to an appointment with his cardiologist. He is survived by his wife, daughter, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
