Hugo Weaving Doesn’t Want to Return as Red Skull
Hugo Weaving was fantastic as villain Red Skull in ‘Captain America,’ and the end of the movie left his future in the Marvel movie-verse uncertain, leaving us excited about his possible return. And now that return is seeming less likely, as Weaving says he’s not interested in reprising the role.
During a junket for ‘Cloud Atlas‘ over the weekend, Hugo Weaving spoke to Collider about the deal he signed with Marvel and his feelings on coming back to reprise his role as Red Skull in future films:
I [signed a multi-picture deal] for Captain America. I think the tendency, with those films, would be to probably not bring a villain back. They might for The Avengers, but I didnât think Iâd be in Captain America 2 or 3. I donât think Red Skull will be there. And itâs not something I would want to do again. Iâm glad I did it. I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldnât want to force someone to do it, if they didnât want to. I think Iâve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, itâs not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by. As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. But, I increasingly like to go back to what I used to always do, which is to get involved with projects that I really have a personal affiliation with.
So basically what he’s saying here is that Marvel would have to force him to uphold his end of the contract, but he wouldn’t be happy about it, and no one wants to work with a grumpy-pants actor — which means Marvel would probably just let him out of the contract if need be. We didn’t expect to see Red Skull return in another ‘Captain America’ film, but he did get zapped up to Asgard, and at the very least, we figured he’d make an appearance in another Marvel film, like ‘Thor 2′ or the second ‘Avengers,’ perhaps?
