YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — The risk of new fires starting is high across western and central Wyoming.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning through 9 p.m. Friday for the region. A weak monsoonal moisture flow is expected to bring strong wind gusts and dry lightning, making it possible for new fires to start and spread.

Officials in Yellowstone National Park rate the fire danger there as extreme. Seven small fires are burning there. The largest is the 25-acre Dewdrop Fire, which has closed some backcountry campsites and trail segments.

Charcoal grills and backcountry fires are prohibited in the park because of the fire danger.

The Ferris Fire has burned about 8,800 acres 30 miles northeast of Rawlins. Firefighters hope to have it contained by Friday.
