It’s been a good long while since ‘Hannibal‘ served up any fresh appetizers of its second season, though its seems our preparation for the 2014 course has at long last begun. Among the many delectable courses in casting we expect for the year, ‘Sex and the City‘ star Cynthia Nixon has joined ‘Hannibal’ season 2 in an important new role, but as whom, you ask?

Via TVLine, we’ve learned that Nixon will take the recurring role of Office of the Inspector General in FBI Oversight employee Kade Prurnell, specifically tasked with investigating the events of the first season, and even worse, whether or not Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) holds any culpability for them.

Casting details of ‘Hannibal’ season 2 have proven somewhat limited until now, though we know series creator Bryan Fuller previously expressed a desire to cast ‘Pushing Daisies’ alumni Lee Pace, Kristin Chenoweth, Anna Friel and Chi McBride, and would love to have music icon David Bowie as Hannibal’s uncle. Fuller previously expressed his intent to feature Raul Esparza’s Dr. Frederick Chilton in a regular capacity, given Will Graham (Hugh Dancy)’s status behind bars, though the actor’s elevation to ‘Law & Order: SVU‘ regular status casts that idea into doubt, similar to Gillian Anderson‘s role in NBC’s upcoming ‘Crisis.’

As for the season itself, which will pick up on the season finale cliffhanger that saw Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) reversed in their between-bars interaction, Fuller says:

We’re going to see Will Graham [Dancy] institutionalized and what we know from Red Dragon, the backstory that is given, which is very, very thin, explains that Will Graham was so psychologically compromised from investigating the Minnesota case that he had to be institutionalized. And that’s sort of one sentence that we can do quite a bit with.

As you can see from the first season, we held true to that backstory in a very faithful way, but obviously we took huge liberties in how we interpreted that one sentence. So right now, for season two, we are in fresh territory with a chapter that hasn’t even been written by Thomas Harris. It’s exciting.

‘Hannibal’ will open up its second course at midseason, but in the meantime, what say you? Are you interested to see if Cynthia Nixon winds up on Dr. Lecter’s table? Tell us what you want to see from ‘Hannibal’ season 2 in the comments!
