It's hard to believe there's a major venue Foreigner haven't played, but believe it or not, they're making their Carnegie Hall debut later this month.

On Oct. 25, the band will perform a show called "The Hits Unplugged" at the New York institution — a career milestone that also serves as the opening date on its 40th anniversary tour. As a press release announcing the show puts it, the evening offers "a validation of sorts for the wildly successful group that continues to outsell music and tours of its contemporaries, yet for which traditional benchmarks like a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rolling Stone cover or a Grammy remain elusive."

Foreigner are unlikely to accept any of those honors from the Carnegie Hall stage, but they are working with the Grammy Foundation to help support local music education. The group's inviting the city's school choirs to compete for a $5,000 grant from the foundation — and a chance to be the opening act for the show — by submitting an a cappella arrangement of any classic rock song heard on the website for local station Q104FM. Four finalists will be selected and posted at the site, after which "listeners and audience votes" will be tallied to determine a winner.

As the press release points out, Foreigner have had a long partnership with the Grammy Foundation to raise money for music in school programs, and has "raised well into the six figures" while inviting numerous youth choirs to perform with the band.

In addition to marking the start of their 40th anniversary tour, "The Hits Unplugged" adds another date in support of Foreigner's most recent official live recording, In Concert: Unplugged. Released earlier this year, the album benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Find further details at the band's site, and visit Carnegie Hall's official site for ticketing information.
