An attempt on the life of a Bulgarian politician was miraculously averted yesterday when the would-be killer's gun refused to fire.

Turkish Party leader Ahmed Dogan had no time to think when a man rushed the stage and pushed a gun in his face, but the instant it became clear that the gun was faulty, he sprang into action, charging the attacker as the audience watched in disbelief.

Fortunately security staff and a few other onlookers were at his side in a flash, arresting the attacker (and getting in a few good kicks while they had him down). It's amazing to witness firsthand how history can change in an instant, based on tiny accidents at crucial moments.
