FDA Investigates Possible Link Between Monster Energy Drink and Deaths

FDA Investigates Possible Link Between Monster Energy Drink and Five Deaths

So as a mother of a 13 year old who regularly consumed (several different brands of) energy drinks, this story definitely caught my attention. The Wagon Wheel Roller Rink was the main place of consumption for her but these energy drinks really seem to be the drink of choice in her group of friends and it would seem that may be the trend nationally.

Our personal story is that my daughter finally realized (after a few different experiences) that she felt sick to her stomach, had headaches, dizziness and ended up spending more time in the bathroom than in the skating rink if she consumed more than one of the drinks in one night.  She has friends that would consume 4 or more with apparently no problem though.  So, she finally put the pieces together and made her own decision to only consume one of the drinks per day (if even that).

After reading this story, we’ll definitely be revisiting the discussion about listening to the signals your body gives you and practicing moderation!

HERE’S THE STORY

• The FDA is looking into reports of five deaths and one non-fatal heart attack that may have been caused by Monster, the leading energy drink in the US with almost 39 percent of the market share.

• Monster is also being sued by the parents of 14-year-old Anais Fournier, who died after drinking two cans over the course of a 24-hour period

• Monster is defending itself against the allegations, arguing that it’s “unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks”
