Business was good for the kids in charge of the lemonade stand in the 300 block of South McKinley Street on Saturday.

Zavier Klitzke, 5, Aaliyah Wilson, 6, Kaleigh Klitzke, 11, Dakota Small, 14, and Kaden Klitzke, 14, made the lemonade, poured it for the customers, took the customers' money, and began the accounting for the annual citywide Lemonade Day event.

They were busy with passers-by and motorists who stopped to refresh themselves at their stand decked with balloons and shiny red-white-and-blue bunting.

But their intentions were even better than their business.

The sign in front of their stand said 50 percent of their earnings would go to the children of Jerry L. Maddux, III, 34, a motorcyclist who died in an accident at 21st and Eastbrook streets on June 16.

Towards the end of the day, they decided to give it all, the mother of several of the children said.

"He was just an amazing guy all around, Maria Klitzke said. "He's just gone too soon, that's for sure."

Maddux, a veteran, left behind a son and daughter, said Klitzke, who knew him from her work at the Moonlight Liquors & Lounge.

"Jerry was pretty much one of our family members down at the Moonlight," she said.
