Additional Information

On Valentine’s Day the Wyoming Veterans Museum in Casper, Wyoming opened a major exhibit: “WAVES, WACS, WASPS, SPARS AND WAFS-Women Veterans of Wyoming” – interpreting that the introduction of women into the U.S. Armed Forces has been a long and challenging proposition. It started in 1901 when Congress established the Army Nurse Corps -a military organization without rank, equal pay or benefits. During WWII a labor shortage meant that women were needed by all branches of the Armed Forces and civilian industry. Women played a critical role in the war effort between 1942 and 1945; and military victory would have been impossible to achieve without women’s service and sacrifices. Given the considerable success with which they served in World War II, women were in the military to stay. Beginning with the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, women were permanently recognized as full-fledged members of the military. Service by women continued to be restricted, but gradually expanded during the Vietnamese War, the Cold War era and contemporary deployments. Today, women are full members of the Armed Forces, and are completely integrated into all roles and responsibilities of the military services. This exhibit tells the story of this journey through 110 years of service, contributions and experiences of Wyoming ladies, from 1918 to 2010.

To bring this exhibit to life, the museum will present a Military Women’s Fashion Show to the public on Saturday, September 13, 2014. This special event will present 24 ladies and one gentleman wearing historic clothing from WWI through modern deployments, modeling the fashions and clothing on static display in our exhibit. A World War II restored jeep will also be visiting the Wyoming Veterans Museum for the event!

Seating will open to the public at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2014; and the actual fashion show will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Admission to the event will be by ticket only, as our seating is limited. Tickets are available for free through the Wyoming Veterans Museum. You can visit the museum in person at the Casper/Natrona County International Airport, 3740 Jourgensen Street, Casper Wyoming 82604; by telephone through talking to any of the museum staff at (307) 472-1857; or by contacting the museum curator at douglas.cubbison@wyo.gov.
