Guys, want to keep your hair? Lay off the junk food, because research now links a poor diet to a receding hairline.

In the past few years, three major studies in as many countries back up the claims of Finnish research done a decade ago, and they all indicate the same thing: men with insulin resistance — which can also lead to diabetes, obesity and heart disease — are more likely to lose their hair. And insulin resistance is largely caused by eating excessive amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates.

The reverse doesn’t seem to be true, though. In other words, eating well won’t bring your hair back, but a 1928 study did show that a participant who ate only meat stopped losing his hair quite as quickly.

David Kingsley, PhD, a world-renowned hair-loss expert, said, “While a low-carbohydrate diet rich in dairy, fish, and naturally raised meat won’t make hair return once it has left the building, there’s reason to believe it can slow down the great hair recession.”
