The Downtown Casper Historic District is one of the newest additions to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office announced the listing Friday on its Facebook page, saying the district represents the historic business and civic center of Casper.

"The physical and architectural development of the downtown reflects the importance of the railroad, the oil industry, as well as automobile travel along the Yellowstone Highway," Friday's announcement reads.

"As a county seat and later with the arrival of the railroad, Casper grew to become the agricultural market center of Natrona County and major hub in central Wyoming."

The office notes that downtown Casper contains a wide variety of late 19th- and early 20th-century styles, as well as prominent examples of mid-20th century modernist architecture.

It certainly isn't the first part of Casper to make the Register. The Casper Army Air Base, Buffalo trap, Federal Building, Fire Department Station No. 1, Casper/Natrona Motor Company and the North Casper Clubhouse are all listed as well.
