39 years ago, one of the worst floods in Wyoming history began. It started with heavy rain on the morning of May 15, 1978, which later turned to snow.

As the storm spread, property damage was reported in 12 counties. Over 100 homes were destroyed, dozens of bridges and roads were flooded, and power was knocked out across the state.

Later that month, Wyoming was declared as a federal disaster area by FEMA. Over $15 million in damages were attributed to the flood statewide.

While the "Flood of '78" ranks among the most devastating floods in Wyoming history, it certainly wasn't the worst.

In September of 1923, 18 people died after widespread flooding near Casper. Another infamous flood, which struck on August 1 1985, was responsible for 12 deaths in the Cheyenne area.
