A diver in the Colorado River discovered a grisly scene deep in the Colorado River between Arizona and California: A pair of skeletons on lawn chairs at the bottom of the river. In a story that has gone worldwide, it turns out it was just a gag by some Phoenix, Arizona divers. You can see the original setup of the plastic skeletons HERE.

“We never imagined that anybody would ever find them. They were so far down in the water, and hidden in between the rocks.”

The guy who set up the prank said “Costco at the time was selling these Halloween skeletons for some $35 to $40, so it dawned on us that we could have some fun by placing them in 25 to 30 feet of water near an area we’ve dove before,” according to http://www.parkerliveonline.com/

The La Paz County Sheriff’s Office says it was comic, not tragic. The so-called "underwater tea party" not only featured fake skeletons, but also a sign that made reference to "Bernie's," as in Weekend at Bernie's, the '80s movie about a pair of dudes who pretend a dead guy isn't actually dead, just so they can party.

"BERNIE LIVN THE DREAM IN THE RIVER 8 16 2014," read the attached sign.

"Although the call itself was resource-intensive, both the Sheriff’s Office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren't real and thanked the reporting party for making the call," the department posted on its Facebook page.

That would have been quite a scene to come across while diving, to be sure.
