Growing up, Johnny Depp was so obsessed with Barnabas Collins, the lead character from the Gothic soap opera ‘Dark Shadows,’ that he later admitted he wanted to be him.

Now Depp gets to play Collins, a vampire who was buried alive in 1752 and then mistakenly dug up in 1972, in Tim Burton’s film adaptation of the legendary cult series.  (Depp playing a fish-out-of-water weirdo? Say it ain’t so!)

Resurrected after all those years, Collins moves in with his descendants, telling them he is just their cousin from England who has an aversion to going outside during the day. As you can see in the trailer, Depp and Burton are certainly embracing the campy nature of the original material.

‘What kind of sorcery is this? Reveal yourself tiny songstress,’ Jones says, before attacking a TV showing a woman singing. Yup, almost 250 years is a long time to be away.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Moretz, and Jackie Earle Haley round out the star-studded cast.

So what do you think? Excited? Freaked out? Or have the ‘Twilights‘ and ‘True Bloods’ of the world burned you out on the sexy-vampire-thing that ‘Dark Shadows’ helped to create?
