Cowboys Fall to Falcons!
On a rainy, cold Saturday night in Laramie Wyoming, Cowboy fans that made that long 4 hour drive from some where, were ready to celebrate a homecoming victory over the Air Force Academy, only to have their hopes dashed on the rocks of reality. The University of Wyoming Cowboys let another victory slip away in the waning moments of their Homecoming Saturday night as the Air Force Academy Falcons slipped by the Pokes 28-27.
The Pokes were victorious in all categories except the one that mattered. Wyoming led in passing yards with 195, rushing yards with 252, first downs with 26 and even time of possession with 35:07. But the defense let Zoomie back up quarterback Kale Pearson come in for one play...one play.... and score on a 5 yard run in the fourth quarter costing the Cowboys a much needed win.
Wyoming (1-5, 0-2) played without starting quarterback Brett Smith, who was scratched just before the game because of an undisclosed injury. Entering the weekend, Smith was ranked ninth in the nation in total offense, averaging 336 yards a game.
Smith was replaced by freshman...yep freshman Jason Thompson, who passed for 195 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 75 yards. There were times when he didn't look like he was playing in high school last year. He effectively ran the Cowboy's offense for three quarters.
Wyoming's defense showed up for this game holding the team that was second in the nation in rushing to only 230 rushing yards on 51 carries. So if one is looking to place blame for the Pokes 5th loss of the season it's the offense who failed to put up one point in the fourth quarter.
And things don't get any easier. The Cowboys go on the road next week to match up against the (4-3, 2-1) Fresno State Bulldogs.
